Shumba Ash, Sculptor
Shumba Ash was born and raised in Zimbabwe (The Great House of Stone). He has been living in Canada since 2001 working towards establishing himself as an Afro Canadian visual artist.
He has been working seriously for more than ten years, growing as an artist and working with different materials ranging from wire, stone, metal and wood: focusing on recycling as much as possible; as a means to express his imagination. His artwork is very unique, incorporating both his youthful influences of traditional African art, known as Shona art, and his Canadian influences, creating what he calls "Afro Canadian Art"
Shumba has a great selection of beautiful artworks such as bracelets, candle holders, organizers, bookmarks, motorbikes, and the Shumba Bugs, which are made of everyday tableware such as forks and spoons, and Beaded Geckos, not forgetting what is probably he world's largest wire motorbike. This year he has added the amazing "Spoon Flowers", the leaves and petals of which are created from recycled spoons. Some of his other metal sculptures include metal birds and geckos which fit the home, garden or office.
With wire, Shumba continues to create amazing functional and decorative sculptures that will make great gifts for friends and family.
Previous to Edmonton, Shumba's artwork has been on display in Zimbabwe, South Africa, the United States, and Toronto. Some of his work is in private collections in Europe and Asia too.
"What I do (art) reflects who I am as a person. It defines moods, seasons, moments of joy or sorrow in my life .Each stroke or bend is a thought that has manifested its self; coming to life as an energy that can be seen by all bringing moments of joy, reflection or laughter in its own form."
